Unemployment up slightly in the Hudson Valley

WHITE PLAINS – Unemployment in all counties in the region rose in December 2012 when compared to the same month in 2011, but, that is not necessarily a bad thing.

State Labor Department officials said more people have entered or re-entered the workforce, but there are not enough jobs for all of them and that has resulted in the rise in the rate of joblessness.

Analyst James Brown said the situation will likely get better as the new year progresses.

Officials say the New York's unemployment rate dropped in December for the fourth month in a row, another indicator that the state is slow but sure economic recovery.

Uptick In Massachusetts Unemployment Rate In December

The unemployment rate in Massachusetts rose a tenth of a point in December to 6.7 percent reflecting an economy that is still sluggish.

The unemployment rate in Massachusetts has gone up slightly, or has  steady in each of the last six months. Over the last 12 months, the unemployment rate is down just two tenths of a percentage point, according to a report from state labor officials.  Kevin Lynn, business manager at the Future Works Career Center in Springfield said both job openings and hiring activity dropped in December.

Connecticut Sees Drop in Unemployment Rate

Connecticut labor officials say unemployment in the state edged down slightly in September as the number of jobs rose.

The unemployment rate dropped to 8.9 percent in September from 9 percent in August.

Labor officials said Thursday that preliminary estimates from the federal Bureau of Labor Statistics show Connecticut's job market stabilized. Employers added 2,000 jobs in September.
