Former Congressman Marty Meehan was inaugurated Thursday as the 27th president of the University of Massachusetts in a ceremony where speakers said his enthusiasm and political skills made him the right person at the right time to lead the state’s public university system.

The Massachusetts Legislature has restored a number of vetoes Governor Charlie Baker made in signing a $38 billion budget earlier this month.


The cost of attending the University of Massachusetts will go up next year by hundreds of dollars. University officials approved contingency tuition and fee hikes today with the final increases to be determined once the Massachusetts state budget is finalized.

The University of Massachusetts Board of Trustees, meeting Wednesday on the flagship Amherst campus, voted to hike mandatory student charges by an average of 7 percent. The exact charges vary by campus.  The fee hike for undergraduates at UMass Amherst totals $913.

A director has been hired for the University of Massachusetts’ first satellite campus in Springfield.  City native and UMass graduate William Davila was named director of operations for the UMass Center at Springfield. The University of Massachusetts plans to open its first-ever satellite campus next fall in downtown Springfield.  University and city officials believe the venture will be mutually beneficial.

The UMass satellite campus will be situated in the 30-story Tower Square office building on Main Street in downtown Springfield.  Officials say the expanded presence of the state’s land grant university in the largest city in western Massachusetts will afford students more degree opportunities while infusing downtown Springfield with vitality.


The president of the University of Massachusetts embarked Tuesday on what has become an annual cross-state bus tour to promote the five-campus system.  The tour started in Springfield, which may soon be home to the first UMass satellite campus.  

       University of Massachusetts President Robert Caret said the university is moving to establish a satellite center in downtown Springfield. He expects key decisions to be reached in the next four weeks on a location, what programs will be offered and how it will all be paid for.


The University of Massachusetts is poised to establish a first-ever satellite campus. The University of Massachusetts Board of Trustees meeting Wednesday on the flagship Amherst campus approved an ambitious building plan for the five campus system.  But it comes at time when more and more students are taking classes on a computer, not in a classroom.  

The University of Massachusetts is looking for a possible location to establish a satellite campus in Springfield.  City officials believe it could be another step in efforts to revitalize Springfield’s downtown

The University of Massachusetts has put out a formal request for proposals to lease 25,000 square feet in downtown Springfield for use as classroom and office space with the potential to double the size in the future.
