A rule being proposed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to remove most species of wolves from the endangered species list would end federal protection for any wolves that move into upstate New York or northern New England from Canada or elsewhere.

Biologists Study White Nose Infected Bats in Artificial Cave

With nearly 90 percent declines in some species of bats due to White Nose Syndrome, scientists in the Northeast conducted an experiment this winter aimed at finding alternative strategies to save infected bats.

Center for Biological Diversity Sues to Protect Rare Songbird

The Center for Biological Diversity has filed a formal notice of intent to sue the  U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service for not responding to its petition to grant endangered species status to the Bicknell’s thrush.  The rare songbird is only found on mountaintops in northern New England, the Adirondacks and eastern Canada during the summer, and a few Caribbean islands in winter.

Vermont Wind Project Gets Migratory Bird Permit

The owner of a commercial wind project in Vermont has been issued a special permit for migratory bird monitoring.

The permit was sought by First Wind, which has a 16-turbine wind development project in Sheffield.

The Caledonian-Record reports the permit was issued in July by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. It authorizes the company to "collect, transport and temporarily possess carcasses and partial remains of migratory birds," except threatened or endangered species, to monitor bird mortality.
