Sports Report: First Combined No-Hitter In Phillies' Franchise History

In Major League Baseball, in the National League, the Philadelphia Phillies have tossed the first combined no-hitter in team history on Monday as Cole Hamels and three relievers led the Phils to a 7-0 victory in Atlanta. Jake Diekman, Ken Giles and closer Jonathan Papelbon each pitched a perfect inning of relief to finish off the fourth no-hitter in the majors this season. It was 12th no-hitter in Phillies history, and the first since Roy Halladay threw a perfect game against the Marlins during the 2010 season and a no-hitter against the Reds in the 2010 playoffs.

In Major League Baseball, in the American League, the New York Yankees beat the Chicago White Sox 7-4 yesterday to complete a three-game sweep. Pinch-hitter Brian McCann lined a three-run homer with two outs in the 10th inning. Ichiro Suzuki had a two-run single and the Yankees rallied for their fourth straight victory following a 2-7 slide.

In baseball, Baltimore doubled up the Yankees 4-2. The Yankees are three games behind the Rays in the wild-card race. Cleveland defeated Kansas City 4-3. The Baltimore Orioles and Cleveland Indians are within 1 ½ games of Tampa Bay for the final AL wild-card berth. Minnesota passed the Angels 6-3. The White Sox beat Detroit 5-1 and Houston took Seattle 6-4.

Red Sox Rally Off Rivera In Late Night Thriller

In baseball, Stephen Drew hit a tying single off Mariano Rivera with two outs in the ninth inning, then Shane Victorino lined a go-ahead single in the 10th that sent the Red Sox past the Yankees 9-8 Thursday night.

The Yanks erased a 7-2 deficit with six runs in the seventh inning. But the 43-year-old Rivera faltered in the ninth, leaving the door open for the Red Sox to win it in 10. The Yanks trail the Red Sox by nine games in the AL East.

In baseball, Detroit beat Boston 3-0 yesterday. Doug Fister rebounded from a miserable start with seven shutout innings for the Tigers.

Elsewhere in the American League, Alex Rodriguez reached base twice while the Yankees put together an eight-run fourth to beat the White Sox 9-1. Minnesota passed Houston 10-6. Kansas City beat Seattle 3-1. Baltimore topped Cleveland 7-2. Oakland doubled up Texas 4-2 and the Angels won against Tampa Bay 11-2.

Red Sox Sweep Chicago After 7-6 win

In baseball, David Ortiz had two hits and three RBIs to help power the Red Sox past Chicago 7-6 yesterday and complete a three-game sweep. Stephen Drew added a solo homer for the AL East-leading Red Sox, who won for the seventh time in eight games.

In baseball, pinch hitter Mike Carp's bloop single to left in the eighth inning lifted the Red Sox over Baltimore 4-3 last night. Shane Victorino drove in a run for Boston with an RBI single.

Elsewhere in the American League, Toronto passed the Yankees 7-2. Texas beat Seattle 12-4. Oakland cruised ahead of Detroit 14-4. Tampa Bay outscored the Angels 4-1. The White Sox trumped Houston 6-1 and Kansas City defeated Minnesota 8-1.

Is A-Rod Giving Up The Fight?

Baseball's non-waiver trade deadline has passed, but the clock is ticking for possible steroid suspensions.

ESPN reports that after Alex Rodriguez’s lawyer said his client would fight any discipline from Major League Baseball for alleged steroid use, A-Rod's representatives are now negotiating a possible settlement that could result in a lengthy suspension. The Yankees expect Rodriguez to be accused of recruiting other athletes for the clinic, attempting to obstruct MLB's investigation, and not being truthful with MLB in the past.

Britain's Justin Rose Takes U.S. Open

At the U.S. Open, Justin Rose claimed his first major championship at Merion Golf Club, holding off Phil Mickelson and Jason Day. “It’s surreal because it is something you dreamed about. Something you have thought about. Something you have spent countless hours working towards,” said Rose. That sound was courtesy of ESPN. Rose closed with an even-par 70 for a 1-over total that made him the first Englishman to win the event since Tony Jacklin in 1970.
