Mass. Senate Candidates Grapple with Abortion Issue

BOSTON (AP) — Several candidates vying in the special U.S. Senate campaign in Massachusetts are working to define their positions on abortion.

U.S. Rep. Stephen Lynch, a conservative Democrat, has been trying to reconcile his stated anti-abortion position with the more nuanced stance he has taken since entering the race. Lynch has emphasized that he would not vote to make abortion illegal.

Lynch's Democratic opponent, U.S. Rep. Edward Markey, has been endorsed by two major abortion rights groups.

Berkshire Democrats weigh in on Senate primary

Democrats in western Massachusetts have mixed opinions on which candidate running in the primary to fill the vacant U.S. Senate seat left by Secretary of State John Kerry they’ll support. 

While Fourth Berkshire District State Representative William “Smitty” Pignatelli may not be able to decide to support either Democratic U.S. Senate candidates, Congressmen Ed Markey and Stephen Lynch, he knows what he wants to see in Washington.

Pignatelli said that he’d like to see more of either candidate communicate more with the voters in his district before he’ll make a decision.

Mass. Democratic U.S. Senate Candidates Agree to Debates

BOSTON (AP) — Democratic Congressmen Stephen Lynch and Ed Markey have agreed to six debates in their race for the Massachusetts U.S. Senate special election nomination to replace John Kerry.

The candidates announced Monday they will hold three general issues debates, in Boston, Worcester and Springfield. Other debates will focus on jobs and the economy, domestic policy and foreign policy. Two of the debates will be in Lowell and New Bedford. The sixth location has yet to be determined.

U.S. Rep. Stephen Lynch Expected to Announce Senate Candidacy on Mass. Tour

BOSTON (AP) — Democratic Congressman Stephen Lynch is launching a tour of Massachusetts during which he's expected to announce his candidacy for the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by John Kerry.

Lynch plans to begin his tour Thursday in Springfield with a visit to O'Brien's Corner restaurant, followed by a stop at the Parkway Diner in Worcester.

Lynch will end the day with a rally at the Iron Workers Local 7 union hall in South Boston. Lynch is a former ironworker who became a union official before entering politics.
