Convention Highlights Concerns And Footholds For Mass. Democrats

Passionate speeches were abundant at this weekend’s Massachusetts Democratic Convention, even from many politicians who aren’t facing challengers in November.

Congressman Jim McGovern welcomed his fellow Democrats to the DCU Center in Worcester, his home district, for the party’s two-day convention Friday night.

“I know that by working hard and fighting for what we believe in that we’re going to have a huge victory on November 4th up and down the ballot,” said McGovern.

Markey Will Have GOP Challenger In U.S. Senate Race

Republican Brian Herr says he will challenge Democratic U.S. Sen. Edward Markey in the November election.

Herr is a member of the Hopkinton Board of Selectmen and works in the commercial construction business, according to his campaign website. He ran unsuccessfully for a seat in the U.S. House in 2010.

U.S. Sen. Markey Vows To Work To Extend Unemployment Benefits

A two year, roughly $1 trillion federal spending plan is in the hands of the House and Senate Appropriations Committees. But, the bipartisanship deal that has made it’s way through both the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate does not address unemployment benefits set to run out by the end of the month.

Benefits are set to expire on December 28th for about 1.3 million longterm unemployed Americans. Massachusetts U.S. Senator Edward Markey says he will work with fellow democrats to address the issue.

U.S. Sen. Markey Says He's Planning Re-election Bid

U.S. Senator Edward Markey says he's planning to run for re-election.

Markey told reporters Monday that this is a critical time in the country's history and it's important that Massachusetts has its voice heard in Washington.

He said he and fellow Massachusetts Democrat Elizabeth Warren are doing their best to represent the state in the Senate. He said he wants to continue that effort.
