    As veterans of the Vietnam War age into their 60s and 70s health problems may appear linked to their exposure to the widely used chemical Agent Orange.

The Vietnam Traveling Memorial Wall is making its latest local stop this weekend. The wall is on display through Monday morning.

    A traveling educational exhibit about the Vietnam War that includes a replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial wall in Washington, D.C. is making stops in the region this summer.

  Ron Kovic was really born on the 4th of July. Forty years ago the Vietnam vet — wounded in combat and in a wheelchair ever since — published his classic war memoir, later made into a film with Tom Cruise – Born on the Fourth of July. The new anniversary edition features a foreword by Bruce Springsteen.

In addition, Kovic - who continues his activism -  has written a new memoir entitled Hurricane Street, which chronicles the 1970s activism of the American Veterans Movement.

The Vietnam Memorial Moving Wall will remain in Halfmoon Town Park until June 6th.

Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund

A replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial will be displayed in western Massachusetts this summer as part of a national tour. 

Thousands of people are expected to visit the exhibit which will be at the Eastern States Exposition in West Springfield. 

A local planning committee has started working on the details.  WAMC’s Pioneer Valley Bureau Chief Paul Tuthill spoke with Chris Lizotte, director of the West Springfield Department of Veterans Services.

Veterans, peace activists, and an historian will be observing the 40th anniversary of the end of the Vietnam War at a “teach-in.”  The program, which is free and open to the public, is a collaboration of the UMass Amherst History Department and the Veterans Education Project.

The event- “The Conflicting Legacies of the Vietnam War: Why They Still Matter”  is at 7 PM  Thursday April 23 at Goodell Hall  at UMass Amherst.

NY Congressman Reintroduces Agent Orange Bill

A New York congressman has reintroduced legislation concerning veterans who were exposed to Agent Orange.

Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel says he is personally looking into the lawsuit filed earlier this week by Vietnam veterans who suffered from post-traumatic stress and received less than honorable discharges from the military.

A federal lawsuit accuses the U.S. military of failing to upgrade the discharges of Vietnam veterans who developed post-traumatic stress disorder and seeks relief for them.

The lawsuit was filed Monday in Connecticut by five Vietnam veterans and three veterans organizations. The veterans say they suffered PTSD before it was recognized and were discharged under other-than-honorable conditions that made them ineligible for benefits.
