Power outages, transit closures remain in Massachusetts after major winter storm

BOSTON (AP) — A massive snowstorm packing hurricane-force winds has knocked out power to more than 400,000 customers in Massachusetts and has shuttered a nuclear power plant.

Late this morning NStar reported more than 248,000 customers out and National Grid about 160,000. Most are in southeastern Massachusetts and Cape Cod, where there was wet heavy snow and winds gusting over 75 mph.

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — Connecticut's governor has ordered all roads closed until further notice, expanding a limited travel ban issued Friday afternoon, as officials deal with a storm that dumped more than 2 feet of snow on the state.

Governor Dan Malloy said this morning that stalled or abandoned vehicles will only slow the recovery process.

Massive Winter Storm Slams Northeast

BOSTON (AP) — A massive storm packing hurricane-force winds and blizzard conditions is sweeping through the Northeast, dumping more than 2 feet of snow on New England and knocking out power to 650,000 customers.

More than 28 inches of snow had fallen in parts of central Connecticut by early Saturday, and areas of southeastern Massachusetts, Rhode Island and New Hampshire notched 2 feet or more.

The National Weather Service says up to 3 feet is expected in Boston, threatening the city's 2003 record of 27.6 inches.

Multi-car accident causes delays on I-89 in Vt.

SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) — Vermont State Police say two people were taken to the hospital with minor injuries after several vehicles crashed on Interstate 89 in South Burlington during the snowstorm.

Police say a trooper was helping a driver who had gone off the road on Friday when another car slid off the interstate. Police say a man who stopped to help the second vehicle was struck by a third vehicle that then hit the second car head on.
