West Point officials say the top U.S. military officer will speak at its commencement ceremony next month.
The U.S. Military Academy announced Friday that General Martin Dempsey, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, will be the commencement speaker for the Class of 2015 on May 23. Dempsey is a member of the Class of 1974. President Barack Obama delivered the commencement address at West Point last year, during which he laid out his foreign policy vision. Obama this May will deliver the commencement address at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy in New London, Connecticut.
President Obama delivered the graduation speech at West Point Wednesday, and with it, a foreign policy change of direction. Now, two Congressmen from the Hudson Valley from different sides of the aisle are weighing in.
President Obama’s speech outlined a shift to more collaboration and less combat on the international stage. He says the U.S. must lead on this stage, and the military is the backbone of this leadership.
“But U.S. military action cannot be the only, or even primary, component of our leadership in every instance,” President Obama said.

1,064 cadets received diplomas after listening to President Obama deliver the graduation speech.
“You are the first class to graduate since 9/11 who may not be sent into combat in Iraq or Afghanistan,” President Obama said.
WEST POINT – Civilian employees at West Point who have been furloughed because of the federal government shutdown, gathered outside Thayer Gate on Tuesday to call for an end to the “irresponsibility displayed by Republicans in Congress.”
Donald Hale, president of the American Federation of Government Employees Local 2367, called for an end to the gridlock in Washington.
