A skier reported missing last week on Whiteface Mountain was located this week in Sacramento, California.  New York State Police say the investigation continues as they attempt to determine how the man ended up nearly 3,000 miles away.

A Toronto firefighter who was the subject of a massive six-day search involving eight government agencies at an Adirondack ski center has been located safe — in California.

New York State Police say the man rescuers have been searching for on Whiteface Mountain for more than five days was found in good condition — 3,000 miles away. Police say Toronto man Constantinos “Danny” Filippidis “made contact with local authorities” and that the circumstances of the case remain under investigation. The 49-year-old firefighter had been skiing with friends Wednesday when he was reported missing.

With the snowfall earlier this month ski mountains across the area built a strong base for the Presidents Day holiday.  Many resorts are expecting record attendance when final numbers come out.

It is the transitional season as winter begins to intrude on autumn.  The colors of fall foliage linger as temperatures drop and leaves begin to fall from trees.  Occasional snow flurries tease cold weather to come.  This past weekend as early snow dusted Northeast mountains, some ski areas scrambled to be the first, and earliest, to open trails.

New York officials have announced that two state-owned ski centers will open on Sunday.

The first snow of the season has fallen in the Adirondacks, where Whiteface Mountain has received a dusting.

Some Essex County officials are calling on the state to fix the popular scenic highway that travels up Whiteface Mountain near Lake Placid.

A member of the Essex County Board of Supervisors, Roby Politi, tells the Plattsburgh Press-Republican that the Whiteface Mountain Veterans Memorial Highway is in terrible shape and unsafe. He says thousands of people drive up the toll road to the summit of Whiteface each year but the state has paid little attention to maintenance.
