Studies done earlier this year show noise levels coming from wind turbines at the Hoosac Wind Project in northwestern Massachusetts were out of compliance with state regulations. People living in the area have complained of adverse health impacts since the turbines began spinning in 2012.

Voters in the town of Peru, Massachusetts narrowly approved a bylaw banning industrial wind projects at a recent town meeting.

The bylaw prohibits the construction of wind turbines where more than half of the power generated would be sold off-site.  The bylaw was initiated by the group, Peru Concerned Citizens, which formed after developer Lightship Energy proposed building two 500-foot turbines in town. By a vote of 105 to 52, the measure exactly met the required two-thirds. Susan Masino is a member of PCC.

Connecticut lawmakers have approved regulations governing wind power in Connecticut, ending an impasse that blocked new turbines producing clean energy.

The legislature's Regulation Review Committee approved regulations Tuesday that define various mechanical parts of wind turbines, stipulate how siting officials may measure the height of wind turbines and provide other technical details.

A 2011 law called for the state Siting Council to adopt regulations governing wind power. But the Regulation Review Committee has rejected several proposed rules since late last year.

Voters in a small Berkshire County community earlier this week voted against a proposal that many some are arguing would open the town up for more wind energy development. The move comes at a time when more small Western Massachusetts towns are planning for their futures with wind energy in mind.

At a special town meeting Monday evening in the small Berkshire County town of Peru, voters rejected a proposed bylaw amendment that would have raised the noise threshold for wind turbines operating in the town.

Massachusetts residents living near a recently completed large-scale industrial wind farm in the Northern Berkshires have filed noise complaints to state officials.

This week a group of concerned residents called the Friends of Florida and Monroe met to communicate their experiences of living near the so-called Hoosac Wind Project, a 19-turbine wind farm owned and operated by Iberdrola Renewables in the Berkshire County town of Florida and neighboring Franklin County Town of Monroe.

Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick joined state and local officials in the Northern Berkshires to mark the opening of the largest on-shore wind project in the Commonwealth. WAMC’s Berkshire Bureau Chief Lucas Willard reports…

The Hoosac Wind Project, a 19-turbine industrial wind farm located in the Berkshire towns of Florida and Monroe was celebrated by state and local officials, General Electric, Iberdrola Renewables, and Governor Deval Patrick.

A review of a commercial wind project in Vermont says the project should not have used the same firm to monitor noise levels and perform compliance tests.

A Windam, Maine-based consultant doing the review of Sheffield Wind Project data for an environmental group says it indicates a potential for a conflict of interest.

The wind project began generating last fall. Its 16 turbines generate enough power for about 15,000 homes.

The study released Tuesday by the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection shows that the Wind One industrial turbine in the Cape Cod town of Falmouth produces noise louder than the state allows.

The report marks the first time the state has recommended a shut-off of a wind turbine.

Appeal of VT Wind Project Dropped

Mar 26, 2012

The Green Mountain Club has withdrawn an appeal of the Deerfield Wind project.  WAMC's Tristan O'Neill reports...

The Bennington Banner says the appeal was dropped after the U.S. Forest Service agreed to require radar-activated lights on the project's wind turbines.

Deerfield Wind LLC, a subsidiary of the Spanish company Iberdrola Renewables, wants to build 15 wind turbines nearly 400 feet high and a half-mile apart on ridgelines on Forest Service land west of Route 8 in Readsboro and east of Route 8 in Searsburg. The turbines would produce 30 megawatts of power.
