Sports Report: The San Francisco Giants Are 2014 World Series Champions

The San Francisco Giants are World Series champions for the third time in five seasons after Madison Bumgarner tossed five shutout innings of two-hit relief to secure a 3-2 victory over the Royals in Game 7 at Kansas City. Bumgarner allowed a single to the first hitter he faced in the fifth before retiring his next 14 batters. Pablo Sandoval went 3-for-3 with two runs scored, and Michael Morse capped his two-RBI night by delivering the tiebreaking single in the fourth inning.

A Boston Year, Red Sox Win World Series


Well, they can finally shave.

The Boston Red Sox are celebrating their third World Series championship in 10 seasons. The bearded bunch did it with a 6-1 victory over St. Louis in Game 6, the first time they clinched a World Series at home since 1918.

All six Boston runs were driven in by first-year Red Sox. Shane Victorino opened the scoring with a three-run double in the bottom of the third, one inning before he delivered an RBI single. The other runs came on Stephen Drew's solo homer and Mike Napoli's RBI single, both coming in the fourth.

Heat Dominate NBA Opening Game Against Bulls

The NBA season officially got under way Tuesday night.

The Miami Heat celebrated their second straight NBA championship by distributing rings and raising the title banner before facing the Chicago Bulls. Miami built a 54-33 halftime lead in a 107-95 win over the Bulls. Miami scored 37 points in the second quarter alone, more than Chicago accumulated the entire first half. LeBron James had a team-high 17 points and Chris Bosh added 16 for Miami.

Bulls guard Derrick Rose finished with 12 points in his first game since missing all of last season because of knee surgery.

Lester Sends Boston Home With One Win Away


The Boston Red Sox now have a three-games-to-two lead in the World Series.

Jon Lester pitched into the eighth inning for the second time in the Fall Classic as the Sox knocked off St. Louis 3-1 in Game 5. The lefty held the Cardinals to a run and four hits while striking out seven over 7 2/3 innings.

Will It Be A Boston Year? World Series Now Tied

The World Series is tied at two games apiece. Jonny Gomes blasted a tiebreaking, three-run homer in the sixth inning to lead Boston to a 4-2 triumph over the Cardinals in St. Louis. He was inserted into the starting lineup once Shane Victorino was scratched due to lower back tightness.

David Ortiz provided three of the Red Sox's six hits and scored twice, including once on Stephen Drew's sacrifice fly. Game 5 is today in St. Louis. Jon Lester will start for the Red Sox against Adam Wainwright.

Cardinals Take Game 2 Of World Series, Favre Won't Return To NFL

The St. Louis Cardinals topped the Boston Red Sox 4-2 last night to tie the World Series at a game apiece. Down 2-1 after David Ortiz hit a two-run homer in the sixth, the Cardinals rallied for three runs in the seventh to end Boston's nine-game winning streak in the World Series that started with a sweep of St. Louis in 2004.

Giants Earn First Victory, Finally

In the NFL, the New York Giants finally ran into a team they can beat, leaving Tampa Bay and Jacksonville as the NFL's only winless teams.

Eli Manning went the entire game without an interception and the Giants smothered Minnesota's offense in a 23-7 win over the Vikings at the Meadowlands. Manning threw a 24-yard touchdown pass to Reuben Randle and was 23 of 39 for 200 yards. Manning entered the game with a league-high 15 interceptions.
