Hear Me Roar!

Greetings and salutations, WAMC Land. It’s the time of year that we groan when we see the white stuff falling from the skies, the negative temperatures make us feel like 20° is a day in Hawai’i, and nothing is better than hunkering down in the house with a cup of tea. Well, we have a great month of specials and events to keep you company and warm you up.

A Celebration of America’s History

February is here and so is our winter Fund Drive. Now is the time to let us know which shows you love and which ones you’re not all that fond of. Whether you call in your pledge or make it on line, we do read every comment that you make as well as take note of your favorite programs. Your comments help us see what you’re most interested in so don’t be shy, take those extra seconds to help us better serve you!

Happy New Year!

Sadly, the twinkle lights are coming down and the menorah is being tucked away until next year, but there is a bright side… we’re back in Met Opera season! The winter season has opened the doors to The Metropolitan Opera in New York City, where we’ll be hearing their Saturday matinee broadcast at 1PM.

Twinkle lights aplenty!

So, we’ve made it to the final month of 2014. Are you surviving the crowded parking lots and the tug-o-war for the perfect gift? Or, like me, have you convinced your family that it’s a much better idea for everyone to donate to charity instead of giving and getting yet more stuff? Yes, selfish in the sense I don’t have to leave the house, but selfless because we’re helping other people and animals. Of course, if someone were to find a set of kitten mittens for Mr. Regis, I don’t think I’d turn them down. No matter what, I do love me some twinkle lights and time with the family. And do we have some amazing programming this month to cook to, sit by the fire with, or listen to as you’re traveling or working.

New Recipes for Flagship Shows

Well, folks, the frost has covered our windshields, the jack-o-lanterns are in the compost, and the great testing of recipes for Thanksgiving is underway. (This year I think I’m going to try adding some oyster mushrooms to my stuffing. And is it too decadent or heart attack inducing if I try to wrap the turkey in bacon? Thoughts?) Anyway, while we’ll be in the kitchen creating our dishes, the folks at NPR have done some testing of their own and this month we’ll sample their latest menu, as it were. Let me explain.

Trick or Treat!

It seems as though it’s been a short summer. The semi-warm weather has already transitioned to brisk nights and crisp days and the leaves have begun to turn. It’s a wonderful time to explore new places and WAMC will be with you all throughout the beautiful northeast.

It seems like it’s been a short summer. Labor Day is upon us, this first day of September, and to dedicate the day to the social and economic achievements of American workers, we have a bevy of specials lined up for your listening pleasure.

Deep in the heart of Tanglewood...

When I was about 9 years old my best friend’s family took me to Tanglewood for the first time. I remember Rachel’s mother showing us the echo bench, and how we would divulge our secrets on one end to have it heard on the other, throwing us into fits of giggles and solemn promises to keep them safe. We would then take off running, on the endless sprawling lawns, only to find our way back to the bench again. I remember how thrilled I was that the Pops knew the song that Looney Tunes used in their commercials. (Later I was to deduce, it wasn’t that they were so pop-culture savvy to know what Bugs Bunny knew, but Mozart’s Eine Kleine Nachtmusik had been around much longer.)

Fireworks for your listening pleasure.

Hello, WAMC Land!  This month we have a great line-up for the 4th, but before I get to that, we do have one change in programming. You may have noticed that on Friday 6/27, Marketplace Money was called Marketplace Weekend. No, you weren’t going crazy… it’s supposed to be that way. The Marketplace crew has revamped the show for your listening pleasure and will deliver on their core content coverage area of business and economic news.  They’ll be adding more technology coverage, a wrap-up and analysis of the week's "Numbers," interesting interviews and maintaining the strong and distinctive approach to personal finance and investing that has always been a hallmark of Marketplace Money. Lizzy O’Leary will continue to host the program. Please note that now our Friday at 9PM show will be the first airing, and the repeat will air Sunday mornings at 7AM.

Greetings and salutations, WAMC Land. By now the Fund Drive is well underway and the volunteers are manning the phones, awaiting your pledges. So to whet your palate for the other side of fund drive, here are some teasers about what’s coming in the latter half of the month.

Get out and enjoy the sun with WAMC.

The sun is shining, the daffodils are blooming, and it’s the perfect weather to get outdoors. Now, most people would think that this is counterintuitive. I mean, do we really want you to leave your cars or home and radios behind? Of course not! Did you know can take WAMC with you on the go? That’s right, we can be where ever you are via your smartphone, tablet, and of course any of your listening devices. The WAMC app has been updated for iPhones and androids and you can always stream WAMC and WAMC2 HD on-line, so you can always get to our website and listen while on the go as well.

‘Spring is here, spring is here,’ sang the bird…

The vernal equinox has officially brought us into spring.  The snow drops and crocus are poking through the ground, animals are coming out of hibernation, and April showers will wash away all the dreaded salt from our cars and roads.

March may be coming in like a lion, but keep your fingers crossed that the lambs will be arriving shortly and April showers will indeed bring May flowers. Is that enough modismos for you? (Obviously I’m getting a little punchy with all the snow.) This month, I’d like to highlight a few of our regular shows, as well as some specials we’ll have on tap.

Walk softly and carry a big radio.

Ahoy, WAMC Land! By now you know we’ve kicked off February with the winter fund drive, but like the frigid air, it will end and leave everyone all the happier for the great specials coming up this month.

Dec 31, 2013

Well, folks, it’s a new year with endless possibilities ahead. Some of us watched the ball drop in Times Square, some rang in 2014 with friends and family, while others (like myself) decided it’s too hard to stay up that late and greeted the new year sometime after sunrise.

I love December. There’s nothing better than cuddling up on the couch with my favorite radio station on, grandma’s blanket wrapped around me,  and a hot toddy in hand as I enjoy the crackle of the fire place (ok, it’s the Yule log on TV, but the bright side is that I don’t have to worry about chimney maintenance). To help you get into the holiday mood this month, we have several specials to put you at ease as the race for last minute shopping and New Year’s plans reach their pinnacle of stress.

Happy Thanksukkah!

That’s right folks we get a twofer this month with the awesome mash-up of Hanukkah and Thanksgiving. This means double the food and double the special programming.

We’re kicking off the celebration on Wednesday November 27th at 11AM with Leonard Nimoy’s Hanukkah in Story and Song. This hour-long favorite returns and is celebrated with The Western Wind performing Ladino songs of Spanish Jews, Yiddish melodies of Eastern Europe and modern Israeli tunes.

Hello WAMC Land. As some of you are reading this, we are in the throes of another glorious fund drive. Some of you have already pledged, and I know some of you are waiting for the right moment. Perhaps I can entice you to pledge sooner than later by dangling the programming carrot in front of you. Not a fan of carrots you say? Hmmm, well how about the biggest and most crispy slice of bacon? Yep, knew that would work.
