The Schacht Gallery at the Saratoga Clay Arts Center presents, "Syncretics: Crafting Identity". Three potters, Turiya Gross, Harrison Levenstein, and Andrew Sartorius, come together in this trio exhibition to explore the enduring relevance of traditional woodfiring methods and the intricate relationship between maker, material, nature, and place, embodying a timeless dialogue that transcends generations.

The idea of syncretism brings up questions around identity and culture. Where does culture come from? Who owns culture? How is it created? Can new cultures/traditions be created in a globalized world? Where does sharing end, and appropriating begin?

The word "syncretic" has its roots in an ancient alliance. It is a descendant of the Greek word synkrētismos, meaning, "federation of Cretan cities". Syn-, meaning "together", and Krēt-, meaning "Cretan". "Syncretic" evokes the idea of coalition and appears in such contexts as syncretic religions, syncretic societies, and even syncretic music, all describing things influenced by two or more styles or traditions. The word also has a specific application in linguistics, where it refers to a fusion of grammatical forms.
