Massachusetts Education Secretary Paul Reville will be touring the state to push the importance of literacy for children. WAMC’s Paul Tuthill reports.
Reville launched his tour Monday with a morning stop at the Ellis Memorial Pre-School Program in Boston. He will travel to Worcester, Sharon and Lowell in the next two weeks to promote child literacy and the state's goal of making every child in Massachusetts proficient in reading by the third grade.
Gov. Deval Patrick's administration has made child literacy a key priority, awarding a $500,000 grant in 2010 to the United Way of Massachusetts Bay and Merrimack Valley for child literacy development and learning programs in summer months.
The administration also is establishing practices to improve child early literacy skills.
