Donations are pouring in for The Mount in Lenox, Massachusetts after last week’s pouring rain wreaked havoc on the historic gardens at the former home of author and humanitarian Edith Wharton.
The Mount has raised $25,000 in less than a week, part of which was a $10,000 gift from the Berkshire Bank Foundation, according to The Mount’s executive director Susan Wissler. Six inches of rain in less than five hours caused an estimated $80,000 in damage. Landscapers have been working to save the French flower garden, home to some 100 species that was buried in eight inches of debris, according to Wissler.
“Our goal is to put Humpty Dumpty back together again as fast as we can,” said Wissler.
The Mount continues to raise money for repairs on its 50-acre estate as it enters its busiest season.
