WNEU Breaks Ground For New Dining Commons

WAMC

A major construction project is underway at a private college in Springfield, Massachusetts.

A four-story, 70,000 square foot building is under construction on the campus of Western New England University to house the school’s dining halls.

The university’s vice president for administration and finance Bill Kelleher said it will be the first major improvements to the dining facilities in 25 years.

"We are hoping it will be a more complete experience for the students and be a part of their campus life in a way it has not been before," he said.

The building, scheduled to open in August 2017, will also have a retail mall, coffee shop, grille and sandwich restaurant, student lounge, meeting rooms, and feature a large outdoor terrace.

The record-setting tenure of Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno. The 2011 tornado and its recovery that remade the largest city in Western Massachusetts. The fallout from the deadly COVID outbreak at the Holyoke Soldiers Home. Those are just a few of the thousands and thousands of stories WAMC’s Pioneer Valley Bureau Chief Paul Tuthill has covered for WAMC in his nearly 17 years with the station.
