An annual state report says police agencies around Vermont have largely stopped using automated license plate readers.
The Vermont Intelligence Center's annual report to the state Legislature says that there were 69 police agencies using units to capture plate data across the state in 2017.
The Burlington Free Press reports there were only four agencies still operating readers by the end of 2018: Essex police, the Essex County Sheriff, Winooski police and the Franklin County Sheriff.
Burlington Police Chief Brandon del Pozo says Burlington still has a reader, but it "has not been operational for quite some time."
American Civil Liberties Union of Vermont staff attorney Lia Ernst says she is "heartened" to see the devices have fallen into disuse.
