Whitehall, NY – Upstate towns continue to have trouble managing sex offenders that have settled in local hotels. Capital District Bureau Chief Dave Lucas reports.
Word spread quickly thru the village of Whitehall when four registered sex offenders moved into a motel just blocks away from a day care center, run by Kate Hasler. Although the residencies were not in violation of state law because the hotel is more than a thousand feet from the child care facility, negative publicity forced the offenders out of hotel. Hasler is concerned that the sex offenders are now homeless, wandering through neighborhoods.
Earlier this year, Lake Luzerne, Lake George and Queensbury passed legislation modeled after a town of Colonie law that requires hotel owners to pay for a license to house sex offenders.
