Sports Report: NBA Trade Deadline Looms

basketball

NBA:

Tomorrow play in the NBA resumes and with it comes the trade deadline.

The Miami Heat were without Chris Bosh for the final 30 games of last season due to a blood clot. The Heat could be in the same situation this season. A person with knowledge of the situation says Bosh has resumed taking blood thinners to treat a blood clot in his leg. The person said that Bosh began the new medication regimen with hopes that he can resume playing this season. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because neither the team nor Bosh has revealed anything publicly.

With the approaching deadline for NBA trades, clubs are making deals:

The Detroit Pistons have made a move as they try to land an Eastern Conference playoff berth, acquiring forward Tobias Harris from Orlando for guard Brandon Jennings and forward Ersan Ilyasova. Harris is averaging 13.7 points per game this season, down from 17.1 in 2014-15. Ilyasova is scoring 11.3 points a game, while Jennings is averaging 6.8 points and 18 minutes.

In another trade, the Grizzlies are sending swingman Courtney Lee to the Hornets for P.J. Hairston. Memphis will also receive Chris Andersen from the Heat, who will get guard Brian Roberts from Charlotte in the three-team deal. The deal gives the Grizzlies frontcourt depth after losing Marc Gasol to injury.

Glens Falls native Jimmer Freddette won the MVP D-League honors.

NHL:

In the NHL, Boston topped Columbus 2-1, Philadelphia doubled up New Jersey 6-3, Ottawa won against Buffalo in a shootout 2-1, San Jose bested Tampa Bay 4-2, St. Louis edged Dallas in overtime 2-1, Washington beat Los Angeles 3-1, Carolina defeated Winnipeg 2-1, and it was Anaheim over Edmonton 5-3.

MLB:

Former All-Star reliever Carlos Marmol has agreed to a minor league contract with the Boston Red Sox and will attend big league spring training as a non-roster invitee. The 33-year-old right-hander is 23-35 with 117 saves and a 3.57 ERA in his major league career. He spent time with the Cubs, Dodgers and Marlins, making the All-Star Game with Chicago in 2008.

Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina has had the cast removed from his surgically repaired left thumb and hopes to be ready for opening day. The 33-year-old Molina has undergone two operations since suffering the injury while making a tag during a regular-season game on Sept. 20. The seven-time All-Star and eight-time Gold Glove winner is among several players already at spring training ahead of St. Louis' first workout on Thursday.

In other major league news:

— Injured designated hitter Evan Gattis and the Houston Astros have avoided salary arbitration by agreeing to a one-year, $3.4 million contract. Gattis had surgery last week to repair a sports hernia, and the Astros said then that he would be sidelined four to six weeks.

NFL:

Steve Spagnuolo will be returning as the New York Giants' defensive coordinator. Coach Ben McAdoo announced his staff yesterday, more than a month after replacing Tom Coughlin. Twelve of the assistants were on Coughlin's staff, including all three coordinators.

New England Patriots linebacker Jerod Mayo has announced that he's going to retire. Mayo posted a 90-word statement on Instagram yesterday with the caption "Retiring a Patriot." The 29-year-old former first-round draft pick said being a member of the Patriots for eight years was a "life-changing event."

Detroit Lions cornerback Rashean Mathis has announced on the team Website that he has retired after 13 NFL seasons. Mathis finished last season on injured reserve with a concussion after starting seven games. The 2006 All-Pro started 165 of his 175 career games and had 32 interceptions, playing in Detroit over the last three seasons after 10 years with the Jaguars.

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell earned just over $34 million for 2014. That total is actually down a bit from 2013 and 2012, when Goodell collected $44.2 million, including $9 million in bonuses and deferred pension. The payments for 2014 included a $26.5 million bonus negotiated the previous year.

The Pro Football Hall of Fame game for this year is set for Aug. 7 with the Colts facing the Packers. The pairing makes sense as former Green Bay quarterback Brett Favre is being inducted this summer, along with former Colts coach Tony Dungy and former Indy receiver Marvin Harrison.

Federal court documents show that former NFL player Darren Sharper has a new plea hearing set for Thursday, further indication that his plea agreement in a drug and sexual assault case is off. Earlier this month, court records showed that Sharper had renewed plea negotiations with federal prosecutors and was preparing a trial defense. Sharper had pleaded guilty as part of a deal involving charges in four states, but a federal judge deferred acceptance of the deal last year.

In another case involving a former NFL player, Reggie Rucker has been charged in federal court with stealing more than $100,000 from two inner-city Cleveland organizations. The one-time Browns receiver allegedly used the money to pay gambling debts and personal expenses. And former NFL offensive lineman Cosey Coleman has been arrested after authorities say he struck another man and tried to point a gun at him. Jail records show he was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and battery before he was released on $15,000 bail.

Swimming:

South Korea's swimming federation says prosecutors have searched its Seoul headquarters and confiscated computer hard disk drives and paper documents.Federation officials gave no further details, and the Seoul prosecution office couldn't immediately confirm the Wednesday raid.

South Korea's Yonhap news agency says the raid was related to suspicions that swimming officials misappropriated official funds and engaged in other unspecified misconduct.Yonhap says some 20 other organizations linked to the Korea Swimming Federation were also raided by prosecutors and reported, without citing a source or giving further details, that some officials had been detained.

Harlem Globetrotters:

The Harlem Globetrotters are headed to the Olympic Center in Lake Placid on Wednesday night, and they plan to fulfill the dreams of a fourth-grade girl who's fighting brain cancer. Before they play the World Allstars, the Globetrotters will roll out the red carpet for 10-year-old Gracee Jewtraw, of Saranac Lake. She'll be presented with an official Harlem Globetrotters' game jersey, and she and her brother, Noah, will watch the game from the team's bench. For the past year, Gracee, who is a huge basketball fan, has been battling an aggressive form of brain cancer and it had been in remission, but recently a new and different form of cancer was discovered.

Legal:

Lawyers for former New England Patriots player Aaron Hernandez have asked a Massachusetts judge to allow jurors at his trial to see the SUV that prosecutors say Hernandez was in when he killed two men in 2012. Hernandez is accused of shooting the men after a chance encounter at a Boston nightclub.

WNBA:

Sue Bird has signed a multi-year deal with the Seattle Storm. The 35-year-old Bird was the top free agent in the WNBA this season, although she was always expected to stick with the team that she has spent her entire career with since being drafted Number 1 in 2002. Bird will take part in training camp for the U.S. women's national team this month in Connecticut.

Dog Show:

A German shorthaired pointer called CJ has won best in show at the 140th Westminster Kennel Club at Madison Square Garden. The 3-year-old beat out more than 2,700 other entries in 199 breeds and varieties to win the nation's most prestigious dog competition. A borzoi called Lucy finished second.
