NFL:
In the NFL, the Giants beat New Orleans 16-13, New England topped Miami 31-24, Arizona blasted Tampa Bay 40-7, Los Angeles tripled up Seattle 9-3, Atlanta bested Oakland 35-28, Denver won against Indianapolis 34-20, San Diego beat Jacksonville 38-14, Minnesota defeated Green Bay 17-14, Pittsburgh trumped Cincinnati 24-16, Dallas beat Washington 27-23, Houston topped Kansas City 19-12, Carolina blasted San Francisco 46-27, Tennessee won against Detroit 16-15, and it was Baltimore over Cleveland 25-20.
The New England Patriots may have to go with undrafted rookie quarterback Jacoby Brissett for the next two games while Tom Brady completes his four-game suspension. Jimmy Garoppolo was 18 of 27 for 234, three touchdowns and no interceptions before he suffered a shoulder injury with about five minutes left in the first half on Sunday. The Patriots said little about the extent of Garoppolo's injury following the game, and they have just three days to prepare for Thursday's matchup against the Texans.
MLB:
In baseball, Boston completed a 4-game sweep of Yankees 5-4 to extend their lead in the AL East to 3 games over second place Baltimore. The Mets edged Minnesota 3-2. Elsewhere Detroit beat Cleveland 9-5, Kansas City won against the White Sox 10-3, Oakland beat Texas 5-2, the Angels blanked Toronto 4-0, Seattle beat Houston 7-3, Baltimore defeated Tampa Bay 2-1, and it was Detroit over Cleveland 9-5.
Cincinnati beat Pittsburgh 7-4, Miami won against Philadelphia 5-4, Atlanta tripled up Washington 6-2 in 7 innings, Milwaukee beat the Cubs 3-1, St. Louis blanked San Francisco 3-0, Arizona slid past the Dodgers in 12 innings, and Colorado doubled up San Diego 6-3.
NCAA:
George Washington says it has parted ways with men's basketball coach Mike Lonergan. University provost Forrest Maltzman announced the move in a statement Saturday, saying Lonergan was no longer coach and that the school "will not tolerate conduct that runs counter to" the principles of inclusion and diversity.
George Washington conducted an investigation into players' allegations about Lonergan's behavior and conduct. Maltzman said it concluded that Lonergan "engaged in conduct inconsistent with the university's values." Lonergan coached GW for the past five seasons and led it to the National Invitation Tournament championship last season. Maltzman said an announcement on an interim coach was coming soon.
Alabama remains the top team in the latest Associated Press football poll, but Ohio State is the new No. 2 following Florida State's 43-point loss to Louisville on Saturday. The Crimson Tide claimed 50 of 61 first-place votes, the Buckeyes received four and the Cardinals garnered six just a day after crushing the Seminoles. Michigan is fourth, followed by Clemson, Houston, Stanford, Michigan State, Washington and Texas A&M. The Seminoles dropped 11 spots to 13th. Nebraska, San Diego State and Utah cracked the poll. North Dakota State didn't make the rankings, but received 74 points after upsetting Iowa, the most points ever for a Football Championship Subdivision team.
Maccabi Games:
The Albany and Schenectady JCC’s are teaming up to bring the JCC Maccabi Games to the Capital Region next summer. The Games will be held in Miami, Birmingham, and the Capital Region.
WNBA:
In the WNBA, Connecticut beat Wahsington 87-78, Indiana bested Dallas 83-60, Phoenix topped San Antonio 81-65, and it was Seattle over Chicago 88-75.
MLS:
Jozy Altidore scored his second goal of the game in the 86th minute and Toronto FC tied the New York Red Bulls 3-3 Sunday to wrap up a playoff spot. The Red Bulls missed a chance to clinch a playoff spot, blowing 2-0 and 3-1 leads.
World Cup of Hockey:
Henrik Lundqvist has been scratched from Sweden's opener against the Russians at the World Cup of Hockey on Sunday. A Team Sweden spokesman says Lundqvist is sick. Jacob Markstrom led the Swedes onto the ice for warmups, with Jhonas Enroth serving as backup goaltender. Lundqvist has struggled in preparation for the World Cup of Hockey. The 34-year-old took a puck to the ribs earlier this month and in two pre-tournament appearances posted a 4.49 goals-against average and a .778 save percentage. The New York Rangers goalie was pulled from Wednesday's game after allowing five goals on 22 shots in a 6-2 loss to Team Europe.
PGA:
Paul Broadhurst sank a six-foot birdie putt the par-5 18th to win the Champions Tour event at Pebble Beach. The 51-year-old Englishman finished with a 4-under 68 for a one-stroke victory over Bernhard Langer and playing partner Kevin Sutherland.
LPGA:
In Gee Chun won the Evian Championship in France with a 21-under total, breaking the record for the lowest score in a major. Chun closed with a 2-under 69 to finish four shots in front of fellow South Koreans Sung Hyun Park and So Yeon Ryu. Chun broke the women's scoring record for a major by two shots and was one better than the men's mark shared by Henrik Stenson and Jason Day.
F1:
Nico Rosberg celebrated his 200th Formula One start by winning the Singapore Grand Prix and grabbing the lead from Lewis Hamilton in the driver standings. Rosberg held on to beat a fast-finishing Daniel Ricciardo, with Hamilton finishing third to fall eight points behind Rosberg.
IndyCar:
Simon Pagenaud on at Sonoma Raceway to give Roger Penske an IndyCar championship on the 50th anniversary of one of the most storied organization in motorsports. The Frenchman won his first career IndyCar title in his second season driving for Penske, doing it in dominating fashion to win the season finale. Pagenaud won the pole to earn another point, led the most laps and won a race that was worth double points in the standings.
NASCAR:
Martin Truex Jr. took the lead after a late restart and pulled away to open NASCAR's Sprint Cup playoff with a victory at Chicagoland Speedway. Chase Elliott appeared on his way to the win and a spot in the second round of the 10-race Chase until Michael McDowell's spin brought a caution with five laps left, giving Truex the opportunity to pull ahead following the caution. Joey Logano was third, followed by Elliott and Ryan Blaney.
Paralympics:
Iran's president has expressed condolences over the death of Iranian para-cyclist Bahman Golbarnejad following an accident during a road race at the Rio Paralympics on Saturday. In a comment posted Sunday on Twitter, President Hassan Rouhani wrote, "The tragic death of Golbarnejad, our beloved cyclist during the Rio Paralympic Games, leaves all of us in sorrow. God bless his soul." The English-language Press TV reported that the 48-year-old cyclist sustained severe neck injuries in the crash. The Iranian flag was lowered to half-mast in the Paralympic Village, and at the venue where Iran faces Bosnia and Herzegovina in a men's sitting volleyball final on Sunday.
