#SportsReport: Cleveland Only Needs One Win For World Series Birth

MLB:

In the American League Championship Series, Cleveland doubled up Toronto 4-2 to bring the Indians within one game of moving to the World Series. Cleveland now has a three-games-to-none lead.

NHL:

In the NHL, the Rangers topped San Jose 7-4, Boston won against Winnipeg 4-1, Colorado edged Pittsburgh 4-3, and it was Detroit over Ottawa 5-1.

NFL:

On Monday Night Football, Arizona beat the Jets 28-3. Ryan Fitzpatrick was 16 of 31 for 174 before he was benched. Replacement Geno Smith's lone series at quarterback ended with an interception. The Jets also were outgained on the ground 171-33.

New York Giants coach Ben McAdoo says receiver Odell Beckham Jr.'s status for the Giants' next game, in England, is up in the air because of his hip pointer problems. Beckham had a career-best game Sunday against Baltimore with 8 catches and two touchdowns. The Giants travel to London later this week to face the Rams next Sunday.

NBA:

In NBA preseason play, Boston topped Brooklyn 120-99, Charlotte beat Chicago in overtime 108-104, Utah won against the Clippers 104-78, and it was Detroit over Milwaukee 102-78.

New York Knicks guard Chasson Randle is expected to miss 3-to-4 weeks after breaking the orbital bone around his left eye last Friday during practice. A CT scan over the weekend revealed the extent of the injury. Randle saw a specialist yesterday who determined surgery would not be necessary.

The lawsuit alleging NBA star Derrick Rose and his friends raped an incapacitated woman is all about consent. Jurors who return to court Tuesday for the civil trial will have to determine whether the woman agreed to sex or was too incapacitated to do so. Experts say consent is at the center of evolving rape and sexual assault laws, but there's no commonly accepted definition. Rebecca O'Connor of the Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network says the concept is murky and complicated. States such as California have decided consent can be withdrawn during sex and that a victim can be too incapacitated to agree to the act. Rose and two friends say the woman seemed sober and she willingly participated in sex and even initiated acts earlier in the night.

Track and Field:

The New York Road Runners will begin randomly testing top finishers for PEDS at more of the races it sponsors beginning next year. Testing is already done for the New York City Marathon and other races that draw professionals.

NCAA:

UConn president Susan Herbst says yesterday's decision by Big 12 presidents not to expand did not come as a surprise. Herbst tells the AP that going through the experience of making a presentation to the conference gave her a better understanding of where the American Athletic Conference stands in the college athletic spectrum.

Big 12 presidents have ended the conference's latest talk of expanding beyond its current 10 teams, meeting on the issue in Texas yesterday. UConn made a presentation to the Big 12 in a bid to join but university president Susan Herbst says she was not surprised at the Big 12's decision.

Rutgers quarterback Chris Laviano is being replaced, with coach Chris Ash saying Gio Rescigno will start this weekend at Minnesota. The move comes after Rescigno came in to play the second half last weekend against Illinois and went 10-of-18 on passing with one touchdown in the 24-7 loss.

WNBA:

The WNBA admits its referee crew missed an 8-second violation in Sunday night's Game 4 of the Finals between Minnesota and Los Angeles. Minnesota didn't get the ball to the front court within 8 seconds as the clock was winding down but the violation wasn't called. The Lynx won the game 85-79 to force a deciding fifth game on Thursday.

Luge:

Lake Placid's sliding track has opened for the season even with temperatures still close to 50 degrees. USA Luge's Tucker West took the first run down the mile-long track. The Luge World Cup is scheduled for a competition in early December at the track.
