NHL:

In the NHL, Montreal beat Philadelphia 3-1 and it was Calgary tied Chicago in a shootout 2-2.

The Montreal Canadiens remain the only NHL team without a regulation loss. The Habs improved to 5-0-1 by scoring twice in the third period of a 3-1 triumph over Philadelphia. It was a 1-1 game until Brendan Gallagher scored midway through the third period to send the Canadiens to their fourth consecutive win. Shea Weber and Alexander Radulov also scored to back Carey Price, who is 3-0 with a 1.67 goals-against average after turning back 31 shots. Jakub Voracek scored the lone goal for the Flyers.

Elsewhere on NHL ice:

— Kris Versteeg victimized one of his former teams by scoring the lone goal of the shootout as Calgary finally prevailed in the seventh round, beating the Blackhawks 3-2 in Chicago. Sam Bennett and Sean Monahan scored in regulation to help the Flames halt a two-game skid. Brian Campbell's goal early in the third period allowed the Hawks to earn a point.

NFL:

On Monday Night Football, Denver topped Houston 27-9.

The Giants have started discussions about placekicker Josh Brown and his future with the team. Coach Ben McAdoo says that the front office met to talk about Brown, and that the kicker would probably join those talks at some point. The NFL placed Brown on paid leave Friday after he disclosed in journals and emails released by authorities in the state of Washington that he abused his wife. The Giants did not allow Brown to leave with them Thursday for London ahead of Sunday's 17-10 win over the Los Angeles Rams.

In other NFL news:

— Four-time Pro Bowler Arian Foster is retiring midway through the Miami Dolphins' season, saying he can no longer take the punishment an NFL running back endures. The 30-year-old Foster has been slowed by groin and hamstring injuries this season after coming back from a torn Achilles tendon.

— Bills coach Rex Ryan is challenging the NFL to consider ejecting players for blindside hits to the head. Ryan cited the hit by Dolphins receiver Jarvis Landry that leveled Buffalo safety Aaron Williams on Sunday. Ryan called Landry's hit "dirty" and "deliberate," and questioned why the league doesn't adopt college football's policy of having such hits reviewed to determine whether they merit an ejection.

MLB:

The World Series begins tonight. The Cleveland Indians will host the Chicago Cubs at 8 p.m. Jon Lester will get the start for the Cubs and former Cy Young Award winner Corey Kluber will get the start for Cleveland.

There could be more Cubs fans in limousines than on the Red Line as they make their way toward Wrigley Field this week. Fans hoping to see the Cubs play in the World Series for the first time since 1945 are finding a seat at The Friendly Confines could cost them more than what their grandparents paid for their houses. Box seats on ticket-selling sites such as StubHub were $50,000 and up, with one seller asking $100,000 for a seat and another asking for just under $1 million. But there are lots of box seat tickets in the $5,000 to $10,000 range. Standing room tickets were going for more than $2,200 each. List prices for World Series tickets at Wrigley range from $85 to $565, according to Major League Baseball figures.

The Los Angeles Dodgers have revealed some encouraging news concerning their best player. Dodgers president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman says Clayton Kershaw is unlikely to need back surgery for the herniated disk. The back problem sidelined the Dodgers ace for 2 ½ months during the season. Friedman says Kershaw feels good and that he doesn't anticipate surgery being necessary for the left-hander.

New Yankee Stadium is being renovated after less than a decade to include seven new social gathering spaces, reducing capacity by about 2,100 seats. The Yankees said Monday that a children's zone with an artificial surface and miniature baseball field will be created in the right-field upper deck and include playground equipment and a replica World Series trophy. Open-air spaces will be added to the left and right of the restaurant in center field, eliminating obstructed view bleacher seats. The new area will include drink rail locations with power and USB ports. A gathering area above the restaurant will be expanded to 3,500 square feet; a sports lounge will be built in the lower deck and include a full bar; and a pair of party areas will be constructed in the upper decks. Capacity had been about 49,500. The changes will remove about 1,100 obstructed-view bleachers seats and 600 upper-deck seats.

NBA:

The NBA gets its season start tonight. The New York Knicks will be in Cleveland at 7 p.m. The NBA announced that the ring ceremony for the Cavaliers has been moved up to 7 p.m. to accommodate watchers to the World Series.

The Golden State Warriors and TNT will begin the season with a tribute to Craig Sager as the sideline reporter continues to battle leukemia. TNT will unveil a T-shirt during its Tuesday night studio show that was inspired by the suit Sager wore while receiving the Jimmy Valvano Award at this year's ESPY Awards. The Warriors will then give their fans at their season opener against San Antonio a Sager Strong T-shirt. The team also will play a message in the arena supporting his fight. Sager won't be able to work the game as he continues treatment for the disease.

The Utah Jazz have picked up the 2017-18 team option on Rodney Hood's contract. Hood was the No. 23 overall pick in 2014 and has turned into the Jazz's second-best scorer after Gordon Hayward. His points per game jumped from 8.7 as a rookie to 14.5 last season.

USA Luge:

Reigning USA Luge national champion and 2014 Sochi Olympic team member Aidan Kelly will skip this year's international sliding season while recovering from a herniated disk. Kelly was 20th in last season's World Cup standings, highlighted by an eighth-place showing on his home track at New York's Mount Van Hoevenberg. USA Luge's national championships are Friday and Saturday in Lake Placid. Veteran U.S. men's luge athlete Chris Mazdzer also will not be present for the championships, since he'll be in Pyeongchang, South Korea, as part of a group selected to test the track that will host the 2018 Olympics.
