Ezekiel Elliott could be out of the Dallas Cowboys' lineup until mid-December.
A federal judge has cleared the way for the NFL to enforce a six-game suspension it handed to the Cowboys running back over domestic violence allegations.
U.S. District Judge Katherine Polk Failla denied the request for a preliminary injunction from players' union attorneys working for Elliott. Failla has put the ruling on hold for 24 hours to give Elliott's legal team time to appeal, a likely move. She heard arguments from both sides on Monday in federal court in Manhattan with Elliott in attendance before rendering her decision hours later.
It's the second time a federal ruling has overturned a reprieve that kept Elliott on the field. The NFL has been trying to successfully suspend Elliott since the end of preseason. The issue stems from allegations of a physical dispute between Elliott and an ex-girlfriend last year.
If the suspension holds this time, Elliott will miss Sunday's home game against the Chiefs and won't be eligible to play again until Dec. 17 at Oakland.
NFL-SCHEDULE
The Denver Broncos were in a giving mood Monday night, and their generosity allowed the Kansas City Chiefs to end a two-game losing streak.
The Chiefs took advantage of Denver's five turnovers in a 29-19 win over the Broncos at Kansas City. The Chiefs intercepted Trevor Siemian three times and recovered a pair of fumbles to improve to 6-2.
Marcus Peters opened the scoring by returning a fumble 45 yards for a touchdown 5 ½ minutes into the game. Alex Smith doubled Kansas City's lead by hitting Travis Kelce for a 29-yard touchdown a little more than 3 ½ minutes later.
Smith was just 14 of 31 passing but finished with 202 yards and no interceptions. Kelce was Smith's primary target with seven receptions for 133 yards.
Harrison Butker kicked five field goals as the Chiefs dropped the Broncos to 3-4.
In other NFL news:
— The San Francisco 49ers have reportedly acquired Jimmy Garoppolo from the New England Patriots. ESPN reports Monday that the Niners dealt a 2018 second-round pick to the Patriots for Garoppolo, giving San Francisco its latest quarterback of the future. Garappolo has started just two games in four NFL seasons.
— The Bears say tight end Zach Miller had "urgent" surgery to repair an artery in his left leg after suffering a gruesome injury in Sunday's loss at New Orleans. The team says the operation Sunday to repair a torn popliteal artery was successful. Miller dislocated his knee when he landed in the end zone attempting to catch a 25-yard touchdown pass from Mitchell Trubisky.
— The Seahawks have worked out a deal to acquire left tackle Duane Brown from the Texans for cornerback Jeremy Lane and two draft picks. Brown made his season debut for the Texans on Sunday against the Seahawks after a lengthy holdout in search of a new contract. Brown played 68 of 71 snaps Sunday despite only limited practice time.
— Baltimore Ravens coach John Harbaugh says "there's a good chance" Joe Flacco will play Sunday at Tennessee after suffering a concussion last week. Flacco also received a gash to the head while absorbing a late, high hit from Miami linebacker Kiko Alonso in Baltimore's 40-0 victory Thursday night. Harbaugh said Flacco's concussion symptoms are "zero," although the 10-year veteran will remain on concussion protocol at least until Baltimore resumes practice on Wednesday.
— The league has suspended injured Chicago Bears linebacker Jerrell Freeman 10 games for violating the league's policy against performance-enhancing drugs. It was the second PED suspension in as many years for Freeman, who received a four-week punishment last season.
NBA-SCHEDULE
The Boston Celtics' winning streak continues. So does the San Antonio Spurs' losing skid.
Kyrie Irving poured in 24 points and the Celtics picked up their fifth straight win since an 0-2 start by downing the Spurs, 108-94. Irving contributed two 3-pointers and a layup while the Celtics were opening the second half on a 10-2 run to take a 13-point lead.
Jaylen Brown had 18 points as the Celtics dealt the Spurs their third straight loss since opening the season 4-0.
LaMarcus Aldridge led San Antonio in scoring for its first six games before Boston held him to 11 points.

— Stephen Curry shot 7-for-11 from 3-point range in a 31-point effort that highlighted the Warriors' 141-113 pounding of the Clippers in Los Angeles. Kevin Durant added 19 points and helped Golden State shoot 58 percent from the field.
— The 76ers earned a 115-107 win at Houston with Ben Simmons contributing 24 points, nine assists and seven rebounds. Joel Embiid added 22 points for the Sixers, who blew a 14-point lead before holding the Rockets to four points over the final 3:28.
— DeMar DeRozan dropped in 25 points and the Raptors led by as many as 26 before coasting to a 99-85 win at Portland. Kyle Lowry added a season-high 19 points, grabbed 10 boards and helped Toronto outscore Portland 25-6 in the second quarter.
— Kemba Walker scored nine of his 27 points over the final eight minutes as the Hornets turned a 10-point deficit into a 104-99 victory at Memphis. Jeremy Lamb added 17 points and rookie Malik Monk finished with 13 points for Charlotte, which went on an 18-4 spurt late in the game.
— Marreese Speights nailed five of his career-high six 3-pointers during a decisive 22-6 run that sent the Magic past the Pelicans 115-99. Nikola Vucevic, Evan Fournier and Jonathon Simmons each scored 20 points and helped Orlando shoot 51 percent from the field.
— Jeff Teague scored 23 points and Andrew Wiggins chipped in 22 as the Timberwolves outlasted the Heat 125-122 in overtime. Karl-Anthony Towns scored 20 points and grabbed 12 rebounds for the Timberwolves.
— Kristaps Porzingis scored a career-high 38 points as the Knicks won for the second straight night, 116-110 against the Nuggets. Kyle O'Quinn added 15 points and 12 rebounds for the Knicks, who blew all of a 23-point, third-quarter lead.
— Rodney Hood scored 15 of his season-high 25 points in the third quarter to help the Jazz rally past the Mavericks 104-89. Ricky Rubio delivered 20 points for Utah, which took control with a 25-4 to start the third quarter after Dallas shot 9-for-14 from 3-point range in the opening half.
NBA-BULLS-MIROTIC
Chicago Bulls forward Nikola Mirotic has decided not to have surgery to repair the broken bones in his face. Mirotic suffered several broken bones as well as a concussion when he got into a fight with teammate Bobby Portis during practice on Oct. 17. Vice president of basketball operations John Paxson says Mirotic will resume light activity — mostly riding a bike — on Tuesday.
MLB-MANAGERS
The best and worst teams in the National League East have settled on new managers.
Dave Martinez has been hired by the Washington Nationals after serving as Joe Maddon's bench coach with the Chicago Cubs and Tampa Bay Rays. Martinez replaces Dusty Baker, who averaged 96 wins and captured division titles in each of his two seasons at the helm without advancing to the NL Championship Series.
The Nationals have won four division titles over the last six years following six consecutive losing seasons. But the franchise hasn't won a playoff series since 1981 as the Montreal Expos.
Gabe Kapler is the new manager of the Philadelphia Phillies after serving as director of player development for the Los Angeles Dodgers since 2014. Kapler's only managerial experience came in 2007 when he put his playing career on hold to lead Boston's Single-A affiliate. The 42-year-old Kapler replaces Pete Mackanin, who moved into a front-office position.
The Phils went 174-238 in 2 ½ seasons under Mackanin and haven't recorded a winning record since capturing a fifth straight division crown in 2011.
MLB-WORLD SERIES
The World Series participants are taking a one-day breather following Sunday's heart-fluttering Game 5.
The Astros took a three-games-to-two lead in the Fall Classic with Sunday's wild 13-12, 10-inning victory over the Dodgers. The two clubs combined for seven home runs Sunday and managed to blow three leads of three runs or more, the last coming in the ninth inning.
Sunday's slugfest runs the series home run total to 22, breaking the old Fall Classic record of 21 set by the Angels and Giants in 2002.
Game 6 is Tuesday night in Los Angeles, where Rich Hill will start for the Dodgers against Justin Verlander. It's a rematch of Game 2 starters, neither of whom received a decision as the Astros rallied to beat the Dodgers 7-6 in 11 innings.
MLB-ATHLETICS-MAXWELL ARRESTED
Police say Athletics catcher Bruce Maxwell showed signs of intoxication when he was arrested following accusations that he pointed a handgun at the head of a woman in Scottsdale who had delivered food to his home.
Records were released Monday but don't offer an explanation for why he allegedly pointed the gun at the driver, an accusation Maxwell has denied in the documents.
Maxwell was the only player in Major League Baseball to take a knee this year during the national anthem to protest racial injustice.
COLLEGE FOOTBALL-FLORIDA-SHANNON
Randy Shannon has wasted no time shaking up the Florida Gators after being named interim football coach on Sunday.
The former University of Miami coach has promoted defensive line coach Chris Rumph to defensive coordinator and elevated former Idaho head coach Robb Akey from quality control assistant to defensive line coach. Shannon also says the starting quarterback job is now up for grabs, essentially giving former Notre Dame starter Malik Zaire a chance to compete with struggling incumbent Feleipe Franks.
NHL-SCHEDULE
The red-hot John Tavares helped the New York Islanders cool off the Vegas Golden Knights.
Tavares has eight goals in his last four games after scoring two more in a 6-3 win over the Knights in Brooklyn. Jaroslav Halak turned back 31 shots as the Isles ended the Golden Knights' five-game winning streak.
Andrew Ladd, Mathew Barzal, Cal Clutterbuck and Nikolay Kulemin also scored in New York's fifth win in six games.
The Knights dropped to 8-2-0, still the best start by an expansion team in NHL history. Vegas finished the game without Oscar Dansk because of an apparent leg injury suffered in the second period.
Elsewhere on NHL ice:
— The Sharks spoiled Patrick Marleau's first game back in San Jose by scoring twice in the third period of a 3-2 victory over Toronto. Tim Heed snapped a 1-1 tie with a power-play goal and Joel Ward notched the eventual game-winner with 2:13 to play.
— The Coyotes finally picked up their first win of the season by beating the Flyers 4-3 on Alex Goligoski's goal 4:45 into overtime. Brendan Perlini put Arizona ahead 3-0 in the third period, but Philadelphia forced overtime before the Coyotes improved to 1-10-1.
— Vladimir Tarasenko and Jaden Schwartz each had a goal and an assist to lead the Blues to a 4-2 victory over the Kings. Jake Allen made 26 saves in helping St. Louis improve to 10-2-1, matching the best 13-game start in franchise history.
— Andrei Vasilevskiy tied a Lightning goaltending record by winning his ninth consecutive start, making 18 saves in an 8-3 shootout over the Panthers. Steven Stamkos scored twice and Nikita Kucherov added his league-high 13th goal and an assist, one game after their season-opening 11-game point streaks came to an end.
— The Blue Jackets coughed up a 3-0 lead before Artemi Panarin and Oliver Bjorkstrand scored in the shootout to lead a 4-3 triumph over the Bruins. Boston trailed 3-1 until Torey Krug and Brad Marchand scored 81 seconds apart midway through the third period.
— Charles Hudon scored his first two NHL goals and had an assist as the Canadiens ripped the Senators 8-3. Artturi Lehkonen also scored twice for the Canadiens, who have their first winning streak of the season after starting off 2-7-1.
— The Canucks' four-game winning streak is over after Alexander Radulov scored 2:32 into overtime to complete the Stars' 2-1 win at Vancouver. Radulov also assisted on Tyler Seguin's second-period goal and Ben Bishop stopped 38 shots.
COLLEGE BASKETBALL-NC STATE-BEVERLY
The NCAA has denied North Carolina State's appeal for immediate eligibility for freshman guard Braxton Beverly.
The issue centered around the fact that Beverly initially enrolled at Ohio State and took two summer courses before an unexpectedly late coaching change led him to obtain his release and join the Wolfpack by the fall semester. His enrollment at Ohio State led the NCAA to designate him as an undergraduate transfer rather than an incoming freshman.
GOLF-WOODS
Tiger Woods will be part of the 18-man field at the Hero World Challenge next month, his holiday tournament in the Bahamas. Woods has not played since he withdrew from the Dubai Desert Classic on Feb. 3 with back spasms, two months before undergoing his fourth back surgery in just over two years. He returned to competitive golf at last year's Hero World Challenge after 15 months recovering from two back procedures.
