Burlington Shooting

Following a slew of violent incidents in Burlington, Vermont in the last two weeks that culminated in the city’s first homicide of the year, the police chief and mayor are speaking about the public safety issues facing the state’s largest city.

Things grew heated Monday as the Burlington, Vermont City Council considered two resolutions pertaining to the Israel-Hamas conflict.

Vermont Governor Phil Scott began his weekly briefing today acknowledging the shooting of three students of Palestinian descent over the weekend in Burlington. He then outlined a new program intended to help municipalities that need financial support for flood recovery and reconstruction.

Many in Burlington and beyond are calling for the alleged shooter to be prosecuted for hate crimes. But law enforcement officials say they do not have enough evidence yet to bring such charges.

Vermont officials on Monday described the investigation and charges against a man who was arrested Sunday for the attempted murder of three men of Palestinian descent in the city over the weekend.
