The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation has a proposal to improve access to a hiking destination in the Catskills. There is a public meeting on the plan Tuesday night in Woodstock.
The DEC proposes an amendment to the Overlook Mountain Wild Forest Unit Management Plan in the Town of Woodstock. The proposed regulations aim to improve and increase public access to the popular hiking destination and classify recently acquired lands not included in the original management plan adopted in 1999. Currently, public access is primarily through the Overlook Mountain trailhead on Meads Mountain Road. The amendment includes several projects to address parking and public access issues. The public meeting at 7 p.m. in the Woodstock Community Center also is to gather public input. The public comment period ends December 15.
