MLB:
In baseball, in the American League, Boston tripled up Tampa Bay 6-2, moving them into a tie with idle Toronto for first in the AL East. Seattle won against the Yankees 7-5, and it was Cleveland over Oakland 1-0.
In the National League, the Dodgers doubled up Cincinnati 18-9, Milwaukee beat Colorado 4-2, Arizona edged Atlanta 9-8, and it was the Cubs over San Diego 5-1. The Mets open a series in St. Louis tonight.
In interleague play, Houston bested Pittsburgh 3-1 and it was Baltimore over Washington 4-3.
— Right-hander Stephen Strasburg of the Washington Nationals has been placed on the disabled list with right elbow soreness. Strasburg, who started the season 15-1, is 0-3 in his past three starts with a 14.66 ERA. This is his second stint on the DL this season as he missed 17 games with an upper-back strain from June 16-July 3.
— The New York Mets have placed left-handed pitcher Steven Matz on the 15-day disabled listwith shoulder tightness. The move is retroactive to Aug. 15. The rookie is 9-8 with a 3.40 ERA.
NFL:
Jets rookie linebacker Jordan Jenkins had to leave practice yesterday with a calf injury. It's not known how severe the injury was. Jenkins is considered a front-runner to open the season starting at outside linebacker.
The New York Giants have signed placekicker Randy Bullock and have waived free agent Tom Obarski, moving to sign the veteran Bullock with Josh Brown suspended for the season's opening game against Dallas.
Colin Kaepernick threw against the defense on Monday threw against the defense for the first time since August 10 at 49ers practice. He's been nursing a sore shoulder. Kaepernick is on track to make his preseason debut Friday against the Packers as he battles with Blaine Gabbert for San Francisco's starting quarterback job.
Trevor Siemian will start at quarterback for the Broncos when they take on the Rams Saturday in their third exhibition game. He's battling Mark Sanchez for the starting job, with neither having claimed the job outright so far. Coach Gary Kubiak says he'll decide next week who will be under center against Carolina for the season opener on Sept. 8.
The Colts have fortified an injury-filled secondary by signing veteran cornerback Antonio Cromartie. The 10-year veteran spent last season with the Jets. His 31 interceptions is third best among active players. Starting cornerback Patrick Robinson hurt his groin in Saturday's loss to Baltimore. Pro Bowl cornerback Vontae Davis is week to week with a sprained ankle.
The Chiefs have taken pass rusher Tamba Hali off the physically unable to perform list. The club says he will only practice on a limited basis. Hali had surgery in the offseason on his knees, which forced him to miss nearly every practice late last season.
Running back Matt Jones of the Washington Redskins will miss the rest of the preseason with a left shoulder injury. He separated the shoulder in Friday's game with the Jets. Coach Jay Gruden says he hopes to have Jones ready for the start of the regular-season.

Police in Massachusetts are seeking the public's help in identifying a man who they say stole a helmet autographed by the Super Bowl XLIX champion New England Patriots from a bar near Gillette Stadium. The theft occurred Aug. 11 at Skipjack's in Foxborough. Surveillance video from the restaurant shows a man in a Tom Brady jersey climb over the bar, take the helmet and wrap it in his jersey before walking out. Police say the man also left without paying his bill.
NASCAR:
Will Power continues his end of the season run with a victory at the rain-delayed IndyCar race at Pocono. He held off pole sitter Mikhail Aleshin for his fourth win in the last six races. That has helped him pull to within 22 points of championship standings leader Simon Pagenaud with three races left.
Swimming:
Swimmer Ryan Lochte has lost four sponsors due to his actions at the just concluded Summer Olympics. Speedo USA announced it is dropping the swimmer over a drunken incident in Rio that he initially described as an armed robbery. Clothier Ralph Lauren has also pulled its support as have a skin care company and Japanese mattress maker.
NBA:
Jason Terry's 17-year NBA career will continue. The free agent guard has signed with the Milwaukee Bucks. The 38-year-old spent the last two seasons with Houston, playing in 72 games last season, including seven starts. The 6-foot-2 guard averaged 5.9 points, 1.4 assists and 1.1 rebounds in 17.5 minutes per game.
Fantasy Sports:
New York gaming officials have cleared DraftKings, FanDuel and three other fantasy sports sites to resume business in the state. The companies had been forced to suspend business in New York but are again OK after passage of a new state law regulating the online games.
Little League:
Michael Mancini allowed just four hits and struck out 13 in 5 1/3 innings to help Endwell, New York beat Goodlettsville, Tennessee 3-1 on Monday in the Little League World Series.
A Little League team from Warwick, Rhode Island, faces Johnston, Iowa, this afternoon at the Little League World Series in an elimination game. Iowa lost to a team from Kentucky last night while Warwick hasn't played since Saturday.
NCAA:
Michigan State coach Mark Dantonio has named fifth-year senior Tyler O'Connor the Spartans' No. 1 quarterback. He has been the favorite to succeed Connor Cook as the starter. O'Connor's only career start came in an upset of Ohio State last season.
Tennis:
Elena Vesnina and Eugenie Bouchard have won their opening matches at the Connecticut Open tennis tournament in New Haven, Connecticut. Anastasija Sevastova and Caroline Garcia also both advanced in play yesterday.
